Set Your Home Apart With A Vintage Christmas Decoration Holiday
Your Vintage Christmas Decorations Will Be A Delightful Addition To The Neighborhood
In these modern times, it sometimes feels like the focus is on bigger and brighter ornaments, lights and other holiday decor. When walking around my neighborhood, I can already see all of the different lights going up in the front yards of my competing neighbors.
Ahhh.... The Sixties!
Anyone who grew up during the 1960s knows how popular the outer space theme was back then. People embraced all things futuristic. These elements emerged even during the holiday season. You can find plenty of wonderful Christmas ornaments in this theme including cosmonauts, space ships and iridescent orbs.
A Vintage Christmas Decoration From Outer Space?
Some may find the irony in collecting antique holiday decorations that revolve around a futuristic theme to be intriguing. These interesting elements make for wonderful conversation and they serve as wonderful prompts for stories that kids really enjoy. Holiday Decoarations Made To Impress?
Although the designs change from house to house, it is obvious that everyone wants to be as impressive as possible. Animated Christmas lights, life-sized Santa Claus figures filled with air or in a bubble, giant snowmen that wave at passers by, and elaborate designs of outdoor holiday lighting are some of the many things you can see around my neighborhood.
Not To Say; "Bah ... Humbug!" But Give Me Vintage Christmas Decorations Anytime
I don't mind these Christmas decorations, but it is not really my style. I'm definitely a big fan of vintage Christmas decoration. I love the classicism of old designs, and my home is a testament to this fact. I have iron forged chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, hand blown glass vases, and mission style furniture in all of my rooms.
I believe that a unique decorating design is timeless and should not change on a whim. That is why I am such a huge admirer of the vintage Christmas decoration.
My holiday ornaments are the pride of my collection. Some of them date back to before my own childhood. My grandmother is very fond of me, and is always giving me pieces from her own collection. Almost every year I get a new one. Sometimes it is a bauble, other times a candle holder or old style lighted Christmas decoration. As you can imagine, over the years I have accumulated quite a number of them. Vintage Christmas Decorations Take Me Back - Way Back!
My very favorite ones, however, are the ones that I owned as a kid. I have a little tin toy train that I used to always love to put up on the tree.
I also have a small nutcracker, and a little globe filled with water and a fairy castle. It is enough to make me nostalgic just thinking about it.
Shopping For A "New" Vintage Christmas Decoration
I don't simply wait for my grandmother to send me more vintage Christmas decoration ornaments. Sometimes, I like to go out and expand my collection. There are quite a few ways to do that. You can find them at antique stores, of course, but sometimes you can find the same ornaments at a better price by visiting local thrift stores.
There are also commercial outlets that sell some quite convincing facsimiles, if you value the look of a vintage Christmas decoration more than the collectibility. To me it doesn't matter, just so long as it has that old time look that I have come to know and love.
I hope this piece has started you thinking about how you will decorate your home for Christmas this year. No matter what you decide, Merry Christmas and remember the reason for the season! Now, put on your boots, go shopping and get into the spirit of holiday decor!
