Top 7 Tips to Organize Your New Baby's Room

If you're expecting a baby soon or have recently given birth, you'll soon realize that organizing your new baby's room can eliminate much of your stress as a new mother.

Your baby will have many new items to sort through, new baby furniture, baby decor items, etc. If you don't organize before the baby arrives, you will likely feel overwhelmed when the baby arrives. This list offers some excellent tips for organizing your new baby's room.

1. Eliminate Baby Room Clutter

You might have so many items that your new baby's room can become cluttered before the baby even arrives. Simplify the nursery by putting away items you don't need right away. For instance, if you have baby clothing that will not fit until the baby is six months old, put these away in plastic storage containers until you need them.

Also, simplify by arranging the furniture in such a way that makes the room spacious and easy to walk around when you're busy changing diapers, walking the baby, or dressing the baby. Never place objects or furniture in the middle of the room.

2. Use the Bare Necessities for Baby Furniture

Baby furniture will take up much of the space in your new baby's room, so only buy what you need. The must-haves for a baby nursery include a crib, changing table (optional, but very handy), baby swing (although this will likely be moved from room to room), a rocking chair, and a dresser or armoire for clothing items.

A kid's toy chest is also great for storing the baby's toys if you have enough space. If there’s a closet in the room, store items such as strollers, walkers, high chairs, etc. in there until the baby is old enough to use them.

3. Roller Storage Bins

Use a roller storage bin to store items such as baby lotion, baby bath, powders, pampers, and wipes. The storage bin doesn't have to be fancy; you can even cover it with a decorative cloth or skirt to match the nursery decor. These are portable and can keep all the items neatly out of sight until you need them.

4. Storage under the Crib Will Help to Organize a New Baby Room

If you're still starved for extra storage space, add a crib skirt to hide the area underneath the crib and use this area for additional storage.

Here you can store baby items while not in use or plastic storage bins of all shapes and sizes containing hooded towels and wash cloths, baby bibs, extra pacifiers, extra bottles, clothes, etc.

5. Crib Placement

Organize where the baby will sleep so that the crib is not in direct sunlight or drafts. The crib should be near an outlet so you can plug up items if needed. For example, you might need to plug up a night light to illuminate the crib area during nightly feedings without turning on the main light. Also, you might want to plug up a lamp or a CD player to play soothing music for the baby.

Place the crib as close to the exit door as possible so you won't have to tiptoe across the entire room after getting the baby to sleep.

6. Changing Area Organization for Your New Baby's Room

If you have a changing table, keep all items neatly organized under the table on the provided shelves so they are easy to reach. Also, place a diaper disposal pail beside the table to reduce odors in the new baby's room.

For disposable diapers, use a decorative hanging diaper holder and place it within reach of the changing area. Then you can just reach in and grab a diaper without fighting to remove it from the plastic packaging.

7. Organized Space for Mommy and Baby

With all the organization, don't forget to create a special space for Mommy and baby to wind down. If you have enough room, place a rocking chair with a small table and lamp, a comfortable throw blanket, and maybe even a few children’s books.

You and your baby will spend many hours relaxing and rocking with you reading or singing a lullaby. The new baby's room should provide this special place even if it's a very small area of the room.

More Tips: Place stuffed toys in a hammock and hang it in a corner of the room safely out of the way. Include a few wall shelves and wall hangers to conveniently store toys, coats, or other items out of the way. Keep a baby clothes hamper near the changing area.

Place quilts, sheets, baby towels, and baby blankets neatly in wire or wicker baskets in a corner of the room. Choose baskets to match the color and theme of the room.
