Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Decorating Children's Bedrooms
The Big Business of Children's Bedrooms
When I was just a youngster, my bedroom was a place I slept in or was sent to if I'd done something to annoy my parents. It consisted of a bed, dresser, a wardrobe, a night light and a chair.
When I reached my teens, I was allowed to put up a few posters. These days, children's bedrooms are big business. There's a whole industry in designing furniture, rugs, murals, wallpaper, and bedding. Philosophy and child psychology are also a part of it.
Regarding Feng Shui Bedrooms for Children
Nowadays, you'll even find guidance on Feng Shui for children's bedrooms, tempting perhaps for parents of hyperactive children who are desperate for them to be at peace with the world. I'm not sure about Feng Shui being the answer but I do think bed rooms for children should be nice and peaceful.
The "Busy" Child's Bedroom
Call me old fashioned, but I think there are too many distractions in children's bedrooms now. How can they do their homework or even get to sleep when they have unlimited access to their favorite TV programs or they're trying to reach the next level on their game.
What Should a Kid's Bedroom Be Used For?
Some kids live in their rooms, only coming down for snacks or to potty. As well as living in a fragmented family and never seeing them, you don't know what mischief they are getting into. You don't even know with whom they're chatting to on the Internet. In this stressful world, children's bedrooms should offer a quiet refuge, to think, to read and to sleep.
A Modern Bedroom for a Child
Typical modern children's bedrooms have all the state of the art items once confined to the living room. There is a TV, DVD player, cod player, and games system. It's not much of a punishment to be sent to your room these days.
A Short Word about Bedding for Children
When you are letting your kid pick out childrens bedding, you shouldn't leave it all up to him. For example, if you don't intend to allow him to pick out a new quilt anytime soon, don't let them him pick out something that is probably a passing fad.
Remember that kids will quickly grow bored with their now favorite Television shows, so any children's bed style taken from a popular character will probably be outdated within a year or less. Then your child's bedding will need to change again!
Children's Bedroom Design Tips
Designing children's bedrooms comes with a lot of advice on color coordination, themes for the bedroom, and efficient storage systems. You do have to be some sort of wizard to fit all their things into a small bedroom, and there are a variety of different storage boxes and systems to choose from.
Nicely decorated boxes may even encourage them to tidy up now and again.
The Growth Problem
Of course, children do keep evolving, which is really inconvenient. Just when you're admiring your handiwork on the Spider-man TM theme, complete with hand drawn stencils, your child has reached her teens and is demanding something more grown up, like the latest teenage craze album cover picture.
The Two Kid Bedroom
If you find yourself with two kids who have to share a bedroom, it's a good idea to make an individual area for each of them. This will give them a slight sense of ownership and privacy.
My 6 yr. old daughter's half of the children's bedroom was covered in dainty fairies and my 4 yr. old son's half was plastered in super heroes. They were both very happy with it. This way of decorating is even more important for twins, who are always searching for a separate identity.
So, no matter the age of your child today, remember they will grow tomorrow so decorate your children's bedrooms so that change will come fairly easy. It won't be long before they are teenagers or even college students!!
